Ratu Baleidreima, a 53-year-old resident of Nadi, is taking steps to secure a safer future for his family by planning to build a more resilient home that can withstand future flooding. Recently, he and his family were evacuated after floodwaters inundated their makeshift residence on Friday, compelling them to seek shelter at the Andrews Primary School along with other evacuees.
In 2019, Mr. Baleidreima purchased land in Nawaijikuma Settlement, an area often hit by flooding, where he constructed a temporary home for his family. He recounted the challenges they have faced, stating that every flood has forced them to evacuate. “My only wish is to build a high post-setting house for my family. We have plans for that, but due to my limited income, I can’t afford it right now, as I am prioritizing my children’s education,” he shared.
Mr. Baleidreima has five children, with his eldest enrolled in Nadi Special School and the next in line to start high school next year. He described the frantic moments before the evacuation: “On Christmas Day, we were set to have lunch when the water rushed into our home. I alerted the police, and we quickly gathered food, cooking utensils, and clothes before being transported to safety.”
Once the floodwaters recede, he plans to return and clean his home, hoping to eventually build a structure that can withstand the challenges posed by the natural environment.
