During a recent parliamentary session, Opposition MP Jone Usamate highlighted that the disintegration of family structures contributes significantly to societal challenges. He made these remarks while discussing the importance of the newly proposed Childcare and Protection Act 2024.

Mr. Usamate emphasized that parental responsibility, as outlined in Clause Seven of the Act, is crucial for addressing these issues. He stated, “This Bill is about the promotion and protection of our children,” underscoring its goal to create a supportive environment for youth. He also noted that the responsibility for child welfare extends beyond just schools, the Department of Children, or families; it involves everyone in the community.

He stressed that securing a bright future for children will ultimately benefit the nation as a whole. The legislation proposes the establishment of a Department for Children dedicated to ensuring that children receive the opportunities they deserve, which in turn contributes to a stronger future for the country.

On December 5, Parliament passed this important Bill, along with the Child Justice Act. Jonathan Veitch, the UNICEF Pacific representative, expressed support for the new laws, congratulating the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection for achieving this significant milestone. Veitch recognized that this commitment aligns with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and other international child protection standards.

This development not only reflects a growing recognition of the importance of child welfare in society but also represents a collaborative approach to ensure that the future generations have the support and protection they need to thrive. The passage of these Acts signals optimism for the welfare of children and a proactive stance toward building a better tomorrow.
