Former Wallabies and Melbourne Rebels prop Pone Fa’amausili is set to make his much-anticipated debut for Moana Pasifika in their upcoming match against the Highlanders at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Sunday. The towering 28-year-old, who stands at 1.96m (6 feet 5 inches), has previously represented Australia in seven Test matches from 2022 to 2023, with his last appearance being at the recent Rugby World Cup in France.
Fa’amausili expressed his excitement about the opportunity, stating, “Having moved to Auckland from Melbourne last year, all I’ve wanted is to get a chance like this.” He acknowledged the challenges he faced with a five-month injury hiatus but emphasized his determination to contribute to the team. “I really love this team and I can’t wait to get to Dunedin and get things going with the boys,” he added.
Moana Pasifika is currently in pursuit of a playoff spot in the Super Rugby Pacific, sitting just two points outside the top-six teams and with four games left to play. Head coach Fa’alogo Tana Umaga has made four changes to the lineup that secured a commendable 34-15 victory over Fijian Drua last week. Alongside Fa’amausili, Chris Apoua will start as tight-head prop, while Ofa Tauatevalu will make his Super Rugby Pacific and Moana Pasifika debut from the bench.
Umaga showcased optimism for the match, saying, “We’re looking forward to having Pone do a job for us this weekend. It’s been a long road back for him and we’re happy to see him get his chance.” He also highlighted how both Fa’amausili and Tauatevalu’s hard work in pre-season practices contributed to bolstering the team’s depth.
In terms of backline adjustments, Kyren Taumoefolau will return to the left wing, and Tevita Ofa earns another opportunity on the right wing. The match will also feature the impressive loose forward trio of Miracle Faiilagi, Ardie Savea, and Semisi Tupou Ta’eiloa, with both Faiilagi and Tupou Ta’eiloa recently recognized in the fantasy team of the week.
Fans can anticipate an electrifying matchup, particularly with the sharp midfield duo of Danny Toala and Lalomilo Lalomilo aiming to showcase their skills.
As the Moana Pasifika squad prepares for this key clash, the hope is that Fa’amausili’s debut will not only enhance the team’s performance on the field but also uplift the spirits of the fans, who continue to rally behind their heritage in the prestigious Super Rugby competition.
