A doctor visiting the Sai Sanjeevani Hospital has highlighted alarming statistics regarding the need for eye care in Fiji. Dr. Nitin Shah, a specialist in Anaesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, expressed his concerns after observing that over 50% of the adults he screened during his five-day stay required eye care—significantly higher than the 30% typically seen in other countries.

Over the course of this visit, Dr. Shah and his team provided free eye screenings and prescription glasses to more than 2,000 individuals, emphasizing the pressing need for better public access to eye care services. He noted that various factors might contribute to this prevalence, including self-neglect and the high costs associated with eye care outside the initiative.

To mitigate these issues, Dr. Shah has urged the government of Fiji to expand outreach programs focused on eye health, particularly recommending primary school screenings for children aged 6 to 8. Such early interventions could alleviate future healthcare burdens and improve overall community well-being.

This urgent call to action aligns with ongoing efforts in Fiji to enhance access to eye care. Previous initiatives, such as free screenings conducted in schools and by local organizations, aim to raise awareness about eye health and provide essential services to underserved populations. For instance, in a recent initiative, a team of specialists screened over 18,000 children across more than 30 schools, yielding a low prevalence of vision problems among young students, suggesting that early intervention and community education can lead to positive health outcomes.

As Fiji continues to address these eye care challenges through collaborative efforts with local and international health organizations, there remains hope for a healthier population. The initiatives not only aim to improve vision but also seek to uplift the overall quality of life for many Fijians. Investing in eye health is crucial for a thriving community, and with concerted efforts, it is possible to create a future where eye care is accessible to all.
