The RC Manubhai 7’/14” Nataleira Sevens has unveiled exciting new by-laws aimed at enhancing their tournament set to take place from December 12 to 14 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. Tournament director Solo Finau shared that the introduction of a bonus points system is designed to benefit all participating teams.

The tournament aims to attract 80 teams and will feature four distinct tiers: Tier One is reserved for champion teams, Tier Two for regular teams, Tier Three for senior women’s teams, and Tier Four for Under-19 competitors.

Finau highlighted their commitment to fostering innovative approaches to rekindle interest in sevens competitions throughout the country. He believes these changes will not only support teams financially but also contribute to player development. “We have adjusted the competition format to ensure local players can demonstrate their skills in challenging situations,” he noted, emphasizing that strategies like drop goals, which have been pivotal in World Cup victories, should be utilized effectively.

Excitingly, aside from the bonus points, an instant rewards system will be in place. Following matches, individual players who score a coast-to-coast try from their own in-goal area will receive $100 immediately. Similarly, team captains will receive $100 on behalf of their teams for coast-to-coast tries. Other cash prizes will be awarded for various accomplishments, including the most accumulated converted tries, drop goals, and penalty goals, with each winner receiving $100 at the tournament’s conclusion. Additionally, teams that can match or exceed Alosio Naduva’s record of 6.78 seconds for the fastest try will also secure a $100 reward.

The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has sanctioned this tournament, which will be officially launched on December 6.

This innovative approach not only adds a competitive edge to the event but also encourages players to showcase their talent, fostering a spirit of sportsmanship and teamwork. The introduction of these rewards could reinvigorate interest in sevens rugby in Fiji, providing a platform for both established players and emerging talent.
