Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has officially delivered a $198,000 excavator to the Navuso Agricultural Technical Institute (NATI) as part of a commitment made at the Rewa Provincial Council meeting in July 2024. The handover event took place recently, emphasizing the critical role modern equipment plays in enhancing agricultural productivity and reducing Fiji’s reliance on imports.
During the ceremony, Prime Minister Rabuka addressed the significance of equipment like the excavator in improving agricultural practices. “Agriculture remains central to building economic and food security. This excavator will allow students to improve land preparation and production practices,” he stated. The machinery is set to facilitate essential farming tasks such as land clearing, drainage, terracing, and pond construction.
Head of NATI, Mr. Uraia Waibuta, expressed gratitude for the government’s support, noting that the excavator will not only benefit farm operations but also enhance student training, aligning with the government’s focus on fostering a new generation of skilled farmers. Additionally, the Prime Minister encouraged staff to keep records that will measure the impact of the new machinery on productivity, ensuring students receive practical, hands-on experience.
The ceremony also included a moment of silence dedicated to the late Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Vatimi Rayalu, who was recognized as a strong advocate for the institute.
This initiative reflects broader government efforts to revitalize Fiji’s agricultural sector, reaffirming its commitment to establishing a more sustainable and self-sufficient agricultural base. The focus on equipping educational institutions with modern tools is crucial for nurturing future leaders in agriculture and promoting economic resilience within the community.
By investing in agriculture and modernizing education, Fiji is taking important steps toward a more prosperous future.
