Lote Tuqiri, the former Wallabies player born in Fiji, has voiced strong criticism regarding the treatment of the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua during their recent trip to New Zealand for a Super Rugby match against the Hurricanes. The Drua faced significant logistical issues upon their arrival, as their pre-arranged transportation was absent, forcing players and staff to travel in a truck meant for luggage. This incident came to light after former Flying Fijians player Nemani Nadolo shared an image on social media showing the players packed into the truck.
Tuqiri expressed his disappointment with the situation, highlighting the need for better organization in a well-established competition, stating, “You’d think the organisers would have it sorted, given how old the competition is.” He raised concerns regarding not only hospitality but also the competitive fairness expected in professional sports, indicating a surprising lack of welcome from their New Zealand hosts.
Captain Frank Lomani addressed the team’s hard-fought 38-34 loss, suggesting that these logistical setbacks impacted their performance. Nonetheless, he chose to focus on the positive aspects, acknowledging the young talent and resilience within the squad. Head coach Glen Jackson also noted the travel difficulties but expressed pride in the team’s dedication and performance despite the challenges.
Looking forward, the Drua are set to face the Chiefs next, aiming to use the lessons learned from their recent experiences as motivation to improve. Fans remain optimistic that the challenges faced will only bolster the team’s determination and showcase the true essence of Fijian rugby—resilience and strength in the face of adversity.
As the Drua move forward, there is a shared belief within the team and its supporters that their commitment to improvement and unity will guide them toward a successful season ahead.
