A former police officer, Elizabeth Sautu, is set to challenge her caution interview in connection with an alleged theft from an elderly man. During a court session on Wednesday, Senior Magistrate Sufia Hamza presided over the case in the Suva Magistrate’s Court.

The accusations against Sautu, who is 24 years old, stem from an incident in March 2024, when she reportedly stole over $3,000 from a 66-year-old man residing in Sigatoka. During the court proceedings, her attorney, Joji Cakau, sought an additional week to prepare grounds for a voir dire, contesting the validity of the confessions made in the caution interview.

Sautu faces a charge of theft after discussions with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Additionally, she is currently on interdiction due to a separate charge involving alleged extortion related to a businessman in Nasinu. The court has scheduled the next hearing for January 27.

This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding law enforcement ethics and accountability, reminding the public of the importance of integrity within the police force. It also underscores the judiciary’s role in ensuring fair legal processes for all individuals involved.
