A former police officer, Fifita Toma Tawake, has been sentenced to four years and 11 months in prison for the manslaughter of an intoxicated man. The sentencing took place in Suva High Court before Justice Thushara Rajasinghe. Tawake, aged 28, was found guilty after a disturbing incident on January 13, during which he, under the influence of alcohol, punched a man who had lightly tapped the back of their vehicle as they slowly ran a red light on Central Street, Suva.

The court’s investigation revealed that Tawake demonstrated a complete lack of concern for the victim, who was left unconscious on the pavement. Justice Rajasinghe expressed dismay at the disrespectful manner in which Tawake handled the situation, noting that he dragged the victim to the corner of a nearby office and abandoned him there in the rain.

Though Tawake is a first-time offender and showed remorse for his actions, pleading guilty on the first day of the trial, the court still deemed a significant prison sentence appropriate. He will serve a non-parole period of two years and 11 months.

This case highlights significant issues surrounding accountability and the responsibilities held by law enforcement officers. It serves as an important reminder that all individuals, regardless of status, must be held accountable for their actions, particularly in situations involving public safety.

As society continues to navigate complex issues surrounding violence and respect for human life, it is reassuring to see the judicial system addressing such incidents decisively, reflecting a commitment to justice and community safety.
