A family from Matanagata in Vatukoula is currently living in a tent close to their home after being evicted following a court ruling. Ajinesh Mudaliar, 38, his wife, and their three children were ordered to vacate their residence on May 16, after a ruling made on March 25. The eviction is linked to a family dispute that dates back to 2018, where Mudaliar’s uncle initiated legal action against him.

Due to the sudden change in circumstances, Mudaliar’s children have missed a week of schooling. To maintain basic essentials, he is forced to walk to a relative’s house to shower, charge his phone, and have meals. His wife and children have since moved to another family member’s home for safety, while Mudaliar remains at their former residence to protect his belongings, despite being offered alternate accommodations by his employer, Vatukoula Gold Mines.

Mudaliar also faces financial difficulties, as he is currently repaying a bank loan taken out to cover his legal fees. He has sought assistance from Independent Opposition MP Josaia Niudamu, although Niudamu is currently overseas.

This incident is reflective of broader issues in property rights and housing stability, echoing similar cases in Fiji where families have faced evictions under contentious circumstances. For example, the experience of Ilisapeci Mate, who, along with her family of 12, lost their homes in Kalabu due to a demolition order following allegations related to drug possession, underscores the legal complexities in housing disputes.

In both situations, community support has proven vital, with neighbors stepping in to help. This highlights the resilience of local communities in the face of adversity, emphasizing the need for compassionate responses from authorities. As families navigate these challenging circumstances, there remains hope for dialogue and legal resolutions that can lead to improved housing security and justice for those affected.
