Authorities have advised 190 evacuees to return to their homes following recent flooding, but five families have requested an extension due to persistent high water levels near their residences. Andrews Primary School in Nadi had been operating as an evacuation center for those affected by the severe weather over the past three days, particularly families from low-lying areas like Nawaijikuma and Nawakalevu.
Nadi District Officer Alifereti Abenisiga has directed evacuees to clear the premises and vacate the classrooms by 3 PM. According to evacuee Veveni Waqamasinika, while the majority of families are returning home, the five families remain concerned about the threat of further rainfall and the flooding it could cause.
Waqamasinika expressed gratitude for the shelter provided, noting that the evacuees have received considerable support this year from local community groups, including the Muslim community and the Hare Krishna religious group, as well as assistance from the People’s Alliance party in Nadi, Frenzco Beverage Limited, and various NGOs.
This situation reflects the resilience of the impacted families and the strong sense of community support that emerges in times of crisis. As the families work on cleanup efforts and returns to normalcy, the grace and generosity shown by local organizations highlight a hopeful path forward.
In summary, while some families face challenges in returning home, the collective support from community groups provides a silver lining amidst the difficulties brought on by flooding.
