Ratu Finau Secondary School on Lakeba has been designated as an evacuation center as strong winds impact the region. Teacher Adi Sai Daumeke informed that both classrooms and the school hall are equipped to accommodate evacuees if needed. Residents are encouraged to utilize the center during daylight hours to stay safe from the severe weather.

While heavy rains affected the island last night, Daumeke noted that the downpour has momentarily eased. As of now, no residents have been relocated to the evacuation center, but local communities are taking essential safety measures in anticipation of worsening weather conditions.

This proactive strategy aligns with efforts across other parts of Fiji where communities are also preparing for severe weather. For instance, in Lautoka, families have been advised to move to higher ground due to heavy rainfall, with designated shelters being set up for their safety. The National Disaster Office has confirmed similar preparedness in areas like Nadi, where evacuation centers are operational to safeguard those affected by the adverse weather.

As communities brace themselves against the potential challenges of severe winds and rain, it is encouraging to observe a strong spirit of solidarity and preparedness. The collaborative efforts between local authorities, schools, and residents demonstrate a hopeful commitment to resilience and recovery in the face of natural threats. This unity showcases the human capacity to support one another in times of crisis, emphasizing the power of community in overcoming adversity.
