Israeli military airstrikes led to the deaths of at least 30 Palestinians across various locations in the Gaza Strip, local health authorities reported on Sunday. Among those killed were a prominent journalist, Hassan Majdi Abu Warda, and Ashraf Abu Nar, a senior official in Gaza’s civil emergency service.
The strikes occurred in Khan Younis in the south, Jabalia in the north, and Nuseirat in central Gaza. The deaths of Abu Warda and members of his family, in particular, highlight the toll of the conflict on media personnel, bringing the total number of journalists killed in Gaza since October 2023 to 220, according to the Hamas-run Gaza government media office.
In a statement, Israel’s military emphasized its objective to dismantle Hamas and secure the return of hostages taken during the conflict, which escalated following the initial Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. The Israeli military claimed that Hamas has lost significant operational capabilities. However, the statement regarding military objectives did not address the recent airstrikes that resulted in civilian casualties.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) expressed deep concern over the increasing civilian death toll, calling for a ceasefire and the protection of medical and humanitarian personnel. The situation in the Gaza Strip remains dire, with reports indicating that more than 53,900 Palestinians have died since the conflict’s escalation, amid widespread destruction and severe malnutrition among the population.
Additionally, the armed wing of Hamas and Islamic Jihad reported that their fighters launched several attacks against Israeli troops in response to the ongoing military operations. The conflict has seen significant territorial control shifts, with Israeli forces reportedly managing up to 77% of the Gaza Strip.
This article underscores the escalating humanitarian crisis as international calls for ceasefire and humanitarian assistance grow louder. The resilience of those affected by the conflict remains commendable, amid overwhelming challenges. Sustained international diplomatic efforts are essential to address the needs of the civilians in Gaza and strive towards a peaceful resolution.
