The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) is currently engaged in urgent maintenance at the Labasa Bridge, where erosion has raised concerns over potential sinkholes. Although the total cost for the repair work has not been disclosed, FRA is focused on reinforcing the riverbanks at both the courthouse and hospital ends of the bridge through rip-rap protection.

The maintenance efforts include placing large boulders beneath the bridge to fill the voids that have emerged under the bridge abutment, addressing the structural integrity of the bridge. The work is meticulously scheduled to occur during low tide hours to ensure smooth traffic flow to and from Labasa Town, minimizing disruption to road users.

For safety reasons, the pedestrian walkway near the work area has been barricaded to prevent any accidents. The expected completion time for the maintenance is approximately two months, depending on weather conditions. The FRA has urged both motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution while using the bridge during this period.

In a recent statement, the FRA expressed gratitude to the public for their understanding and cooperation during these essential maintenance works, emphasizing the importance of safety for all road users. Despite the challenges posed by the erosion, the ongoing repairs aim to create a safer environment for everyone, showcasing the commitment to infrastructure integrity and community safety.
