Dr. Sivendra Michael, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, emphasizes the urgent need for stronger enforcement of waste management laws, particularly highlighting the necessity of adequate disposal facilities in informal settlements. He pointed out that the limited space available in these communities complicates proper waste disposal, leading to issues like littering and illegal dumping.

Michael stated, “This also needs to come hand in hand with the necessary waste management facilities because, of course, the informal settlements don’t have adequate space to dispose of their rubbish. That’s why it’s everywhere.” Recognizing this challenge, the ministry is collaborating with various town councils, the Ministry of Education, and other relevant partners to enhance access to effective waste management facilities.

The initiative is designed not only to tackle the immediate challenges associated with waste disposal but also to foster a long-term change in community behavior towards responsible waste management. By combining enforcement with public education, the ministry aims to create sustainable practices that benefit all communities, ultimately leading to a cleaner and healthier environment.

This proactive approach reflects a commitment to environmental stewardship and the importance of community involvement in waste management solutions. Through collaboration and education, the ministry hopes to empower residents to play a proactive role in maintaining cleanliness in their neighborhoods.
