President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has called upon Scouts and Girl Guides to embody positive values and refrain from harmful behaviors. Speaking to leaders and commissioners from the Northern Division Scouts and Girl Guides in Labasa, he encouraged young individuals to resist peer pressure, reject violence, and avoid substance abuse. Ratu Naiqama specifically denounced behaviors like bullying, highlighting that such actions lack respect and are wrong.
He emphasized the significance of key values within the Scout and Guide movements, such as patience, courage, trust, obedience, and comradeship. According to him, these principles are fundamental in shaping youths into responsible citizens and future leaders.
Ratu Naiqama also underscored the role of volunteerism as a critical aspect of character development, as it fosters empathy, leadership, and a sense of civic duty. He expressed gratitude toward Scout and Guide leaders in the Northern Division for their dedication to mentoring youth, acknowledging the vital work they are doing.
Currently, Fiji hosts seven Scout districts within the Northern Division, which include Bua, Dreketi, Labasa, Nadogo, Seaqaqa, Savusavu, and Taveuni, with about 2,300 members enrolled annually. This number represents a significant portion of the overall national Scout membership of 13,000, reflecting a robust commitment to youth engagement and development.
The message from Ratu Naiqama resonates with previous messages from community leaders advocating for youth empowerment and the promotion of values that can lead to healthier choices and secure futures. The involvement of leaders and volunteers in fostering these ideals allows for hope toward a brighter future for the youth of Fiji.
In line with ongoing initiatives, encouraging positive behaviors and community involvement remains vital for nurturing responsible and engaged citizens. Ratu Naiqama’s address highlights the importance of these values, and his call to action can inspire young people to pursue lives that contribute positively to society.
