The ongoing fight for gender equality and women’s well-being took center stage at the International Women’s Day celebrations in Lautoka, where Mereisi Tavaiqia, operations manager at Empower Pacific, emphasized the importance of mental health for women and girls. Tavaiqia highlighted the multifaceted issues surrounding women’s empowerment, which encompasses critical areas such as health—particularly mental health—which often remains overlooked.
During her address, she pointed out that societal norms frequently hinder discussions surrounding mental health among women, leading to detrimental long-term effects on personal lives and communities. She stressed that many women experience high levels of stress and anxiety due to various factors, including societal pressures, work-related stresses, and personal experiences. As research indicates that women are more prone to develop stress-related disorders, Tavaiqia called for supportive environments that allow women to voice their struggles without fear of judgment.
Tavaiqia reiterated the necessity for open conversations about mental health to help dismantle the stigma and encouraged community members to actively support women’s mental health through understanding and advocacy. This aligns with broader discussions made by Sashi Kiran, Fiji’s Minister for Women, who has similarly addressed the crucial role of women’s health in achieving gender equality.
Kiran has underlined the importance of active engagement from men and boys in both dismantling stereotypes and standing against violence to foster an inclusive society. Her speeches during International Women’s Day festivities have resonated with Tavaiqia’s call for empowerment and lifting barriers that hinder women’s progress across various sectors, including their mental health.
With a steadfast commitment to gender equality and the recognition of mental well-being’s significance, both Tavaiqia and Kiran embody a hopeful vision for a future in Fiji where women not only thrive but lead dignified lives free from violence and stigma. The collective call for action to address women’s health issues indicates a positive step forward in realizing comprehensive support systems that benefit women, their families, and society at large.
The continuous focus on women’s empowerment, health, and leadership underscores the potential for transformative change within communities throughout Fiji, paving the way for a more equitable and inclusive future for all.
