During an event celebrating International Women’s Day at the Reserve Bank of Fiji, Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, underscored the importance of gender equality as both a moral imperative and an economic necessity. Kiran emphasized that women have played pivotal roles in Fiji’s economic development, contributing from grassroots initiatives to high-level leadership positions within businesses and financial institutions.
She stated, “Our women have continuously proven their ability to innovate, manage, and create opportunities that propel our economy forward.” The Minister highlighted the economic advantages of empowering women, suggesting that it generates a multiplier effect that benefits families, businesses, and the nation as a whole. Kiran noted that businesses that prioritize gender equality not only advance social progress but also enhance productivity, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
The Fijian government’s dedication to gender equality is reflected in its gender-responsive planning and budgeting. This approach incorporates gender considerations into national policies with an aim to address diverse needs, aligning with broader strategies to close gender gaps in leadership roles.
Referencing the Fiji Country Gender Assessment 2023, Kiran acknowledged progress made thus far but pointed out ongoing challenges, particularly regarding women’s representation in leadership, with women holding only 21 percent of board positions. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering an environment conducive to increasing women’s access to credit and banking services.
Currently, men occupy about six out of every seven CEO roles in Fiji, underscoring the need for reforms aimed at boosting female leadership and entrepreneurship. However, the ongoing initiatives signal a hopeful direction towards a more equitable society.
With continuous effort and strategic policies, there is significant potential to advance women’s rights and representation in Fiji, paving the way for a more inclusive and prosperous future for all citizens.
