Empowering Women: Overcoming Barriers to Economic Progress

Efforts to empower women economically are hindered by various systemic barriers, a reality highlighted by First Lady Emily Lalabalavu during her speech at the seventh National Women’s Expo at Suva’s Vodafone Arena. Addressing the audience, she pointed to obstacles such as entrenched social norms, health challenges including issues related to cancer and reproductive health, violence against women and girls, and the adverse effects of natural disasters and climate change.

Lady Lalabalavu emphasized the need for a supportive environment and effective policy implementation to address these challenges. “Only then can we truly realize the goal of women’s economic empowerment and create a more inclusive and equitable society,” she stated. She noted that the government is prioritizing the National Action Plan aimed at preventing violence against women and girls, underscoring the importance of creating safe spaces for women to thrive.

The expo saw participation from over 300 talented women showcasing their crafts, aligning with the theme “Fijian Women at the Heart of Economic Progress.” The event not only serves as a platform for women to display their products but actively fosters connections to sustainable economic opportunities, driving community development.

Building on previous initiatives, this expo continues to highlight the significant role women play in local economies. Past events have illustrated how women’s involvement in entrepreneurial activities contributes to broader community growth, encouraging resilience and economic independence.

This year’s expo further reiterates a hopeful vision for a future where women are empowered and celebrated for their contributions. As these efforts continue, it is evident that when women are given the support and resources they need, they not only uplift themselves but also their communities, crafting a brighter and more equitable future for generations to come.
