A program aimed at supporting women and girls in the fields of technology and innovation was launched this week in Suva, Fiji. Known as Women in Tech Fiji (WINTECH), the initiative seeks to empower female participation in the local tech landscape, addressing the gender disparities prevalent in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

The launch of WINTECH, held at the Grand Pacific Hotel, brought together women from various sectors. Sponsored by Vodafone Fiji, the program is designed to enhance the contribution of women in leveraging technology for local development.

Manoa Kamikamica, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, expressed his support for the initiative, highlighting the importance of fostering an inclusive environment that encourages women to engage actively in technological advancements. He noted that as many as 31% of researchers in STEM worldwide are women, and emphasized the need to increase their representation and leadership within the industry.

Kamikamica also mentioned the government’s ongoing efforts through the National Digital Strategy 2025-2030, aimed at improving digital services and increasing women’s involvement in the tech sector. He pointed out that to achieve real transformation, it is crucial that no woman or girl is left behind as Fiji progresses towards a knowledge-based economy.

The sisterhood emerging from WINTECH reflects a positive movement towards closing the gender gap in technology, similar to prior initiatives like the “Girls in ICT” program, which has successfully trained students in coding and problem-solving. This ongoing focus on mentorship and empowerment solidifies a hopeful outlook for the future of women in Fiji, paving the way for greater inclusivity and advancement in the tech field.

Such initiatives not only contribute to the participants’ personal growth but also to the broader economic ecosystem, fostering a culture of innovation and resilience. With continued efforts, Fiji is positioned to harness the talent and potential of women in technology, facilitating a brighter and more equitable future for all.
