The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communication, Manoa Kamikamica, has emphasized the urgent need to address the increasing difficulties women encounter in the media sector. These challenges, as highlighted during the inaugural Women in Media Fiji conference held in Suva, include online abuse, misinformation, and a lack of leadership representation.

In his address, Kamikamica underlined that the media landscape remains predominantly male-oriented, which creates barriers for women’s achievements. He acknowledged that despite these obstacles, women in journalism continue to deliver crucial reporting on pressing issues like domestic violence, climate change, and corruption.

The Deputy Prime Minister called attention to the pervasive threat of misinformation in the digital age, where fake news and AI-generated content can obscure truth. He advocated for a collaborative approach to enhance public trust in journalism and promote ethical reporting standards, urging the government to reform digital regulations and bolstering cybersecurity measures to protect personal data.

This call for action resonates with previous discussions at the conference, where Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, highlighted the pressing necessity for better protections against online harassment and a more equitable representation of women in leadership roles within media organizations.

These conversations reflect an optimistic movement towards creating safer working environments for female journalists across the Pacific region. The nuances of these discussions are vital, as they advocate not only for immediate reforms but also for a long-term cultural shift in how the media represents and supports women.

With a growing awareness of these challenges and consistent advocacy for women’s rights in journalism, there is hope that the concerted efforts from various stakeholders will lead to significant reforms, thereby fostering a more inclusive media landscape.
