The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways has proudly concluded the Nadroga, Navosa Floriculture training program, which took place at My Nursery in Olosara, Sigatoka last week. This event is part of the ministry’s continuous commitment to promoting sustainable farming practices and empowering women in agriculture, contributing to economic development and gender equality in the sector.
This initiative was funded by the Ministry and facilitated by two prominent floriculture experts, Moreen Sainaz Khan and Emili Uluimalolo. The two-day training session attracted participation from 25 female farmers and two male farmers who were eager to enhance their skills and knowledge in floriculture.
According to Ilisoni Banuve, Senior Agriculture Officer for the Nadroga and Navosa region, empowering women in agriculture is a primary objective of these training programs. Banuve stated, “By providing the necessary skills and knowledge, we aim to empower more individuals through innovation, economic independence, and leadership.” The initiative plans to boost participants’ confidence and capabilities in floriculture, ultimately contributing to their families’ financial well-being.
Key topics covered in the training included nursery management, cultivation techniques for anthuriums and orchids, hands-on flower raising, flower arrangement techniques, and skills necessary for adding value to floriculture products. Banuve urged participants to make effective use of available land and take advantage of government assistance programs to drive economic growth within their communities.
This training aligns with previous agricultural programs focusing on empowering women and enhancing agricultural practices. The growing recognition of the role women play in the agricultural sector fosters hope for a balanced and thriving economy, reflecting a commitment to building community resilience and sustainability.
As this training continues to support women in agriculture, the outlook for the future remains positive, with the potential for increased economic independence and community development through innovative agricultural practices.
