For the first time, women from the villages of Nuku, Cakova, Keteira, and Maloku convened at Naroi, Moala, to participate in a Women’s mini-craft show aimed at showcasing their handcrafted items and fostering empowerment among local artisans.
Organized by the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection, the event served as a valuable venue for women to share ideas, develop new skills, and enhance their creative and entrepreneurial endeavors. The attendees exhibited a variety of goods, including traditional sulu and Jamba, along with fine mats and handmade crafts, while also offering fresh vegetables and root crops for sale. This event not only celebrated the rich artistry of traditional Fijian crafts but also underscored the diverse talents and resourcefulness of women in the maritime islands.
During the event, Draunidalo, the Principal of Yasayasa Moala College, praised the significant roles that women play within their communities. “Women are the backbone of our communities, and their contributions stretch far beyond their households. Events like this empower them economically and socially, fostering self-reliance and innovation,” he remarked.
Kalo Leba, President of the Maloku Women’s Group, expressed her gratitude for the initiative, stating, “Today, we woke up early, prepared our families, and then made our way to Naroi to showcase our handicrafts. For the women of Maloku, we are selling sulu, Jamba, and honey products from our women’s group project.”
Unise Vosataki from Vadra highlighted the significance of such events for women in remote areas, expressing appreciation for having a platform closer to home. “Some of us can’t afford to travel to Suva during the Women’s National Expo, but today we are grateful to the government for providing us the chance to sell our handicrafts.” She noted that the event allowed women to build their entrepreneurial skills and improve their networks.
As the first mini-craft show held in Naroi, the event reinforces the Ministry’s dedication to empowering women in rural and maritime regions. By facilitating opportunities for women to showcase their talents and earn income, the government aims to promote gender equality and support sustainable community development.
