Empowered Women Rise: A New Era of Entrepreneurship in Bua

Empowering Women Entrepreneurs: The Rise of Bua’s Business Trailblazers

The recent International Women’s Expo marked a significant achievement for the women of Bua, as they participated for the first time. Leading the Navakasiga Women’s Group, President Ateca Vuki expressed gratitude for the opportunity to connect and explore new market prospects to expand their businesses.

Vuki noted that while the women of Bua had been present at last year’s expo in Savusavu, this year’s event provided new insights into the strides made by female entrepreneurs nationwide. She stated, “I am grateful for this opportunity, as I got to see the improvements in the types of businesses women across the country are venturing into.” Her aim is to share these experiences with her community to motivate others.

However, Vuki also pointed out existing challenges, particularly the hurdles in accessing market spaces. Traveling from Navakasiga to the Labasa market costs $20 and is hindered by limited bus services, which only operate once a day. This situation complicates selling goods, as missing a bus would mean waiting another day. Vuki emphasized the potential for increased earnings, saying, “If we had easier access to a market, just imagine the earning potential.”

The perseverance of Vuki and her group demonstrates their dedication to providing financial support for their families. Their experiences reflect a growing trend among women in rural areas who are finding empowerment through entrepreneurship, which brings hope for improved livelihoods within their communities.

In a similar vein, success stories from other regions, such as the women of Mavana in Vanuabalavu, showcase how participation in expos serves as a driving force for income generation. At the Vanuabalavu Expo, women displayed handicrafts and achieved noteworthy revenue, contributing not only to individual financial growth but also to community efforts like the establishment of a women’s club.

These events not only highlight the skills and talents of these women but also underscore the significance of support systems and training that can enhance their entrepreneurial abilities. Collectively, these narratives of empowerment offer a positive outlook on the role of women in economic development throughout the region, fostering a spirit of collaboration and resilience among female entrepreneurs.
