Suva has launched its inaugural Voluntary Local Review (VLR), emphasizing the critical need for greater involvement of women and youth in city planning and governance. Salote Malagi, Director of Hearts with Vision Cooperatives, highlighted that the VLR research report unveils urgent issues impacting vulnerable groups, particularly children. She pointed out that the data underscores significant gaps in gender representation and youth participation that require immediate attention.

Malagi described some alarming findings on child injuries in the report as a wake-up call, urging for enhanced engagement from women in community roles. She emphasized, “If we adapt to the needs of the vulnerable, our children and every other vulnerable community, then we are addressing a lot of the issues that are being raised both at the community and national levels.” The data gathered reflects input from individuals and families in various localities, serving as a guide for actions to support those at greatest risk.

Seema Sharma, the Permanent Secretary for Local Government, stated that the VLR lays a strong foundation for Suva’s alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 5, which focuses on gender equality, and Goal 11, which targets sustainable cities. Sharma reassured that the ministry aims to collaborate with councils by providing technical resources and training opportunities while encouraging community groups to play an active role in sustainable urban action.

This initiative builds on previous reports regarding governance in Suva, which have illustrated challenges such as homelessness and financial mismanagement. However, like prior discussions regarding urban development and improvement, there is a shared sentiment of hope that the VLR will foster more inclusive governance, ultimately leading to meaningful transformations in urban management that prioritize the community’s needs. By actively involving women and youth, Suva is taking significant steps toward a more equitable and sustainable future.
