Empowering Tradition: Lara Vokai’s Mission for Sustainable Fijian Futures

On the tranquil shores of Nukubati, a small island in northern Fiji, Lara Vokai is actively continuing a rich legacy shared amongst the women of her community, rooted in resilience, tradition, and a profound commitment to community well-being.

Lara attributes her strength and values to the teachings of strong Fijian women around her, especially her mother, Jenny Leewai Bourke, who founded the Nukubati Resort. “Growing up, I observed my mother manage the resort and mentor local women, which instilled in me an appreciation for hard work, leadership, and the importance of community empowerment,” Lara recalls.

Today, Lara is channeling that same spirit into her initiatives, which include leading coastal forest restoration efforts, advocating holistic healing methods, and promoting sustainable tourism on her beloved island. “My belief in sustainability extends beyond merely minimizing environmental harm; it involves regenerating and enhancing the ecosystems that support us,” she emphasizes.

Her journey is complemented by her education at Adi Cakobau School, which helped solidify her dedication to merging traditional knowledge with modern solutions to combat climate change. “Preserving our cultural beliefs is vital, as they play a crucial role in ensuring that our environment flourishes for generations to come,” Lara asserts.

Alongside her husband, Leone Vokai, Lara is now managing the Nukubati Resort, weaving her mother’s legacy into a narrative that emphasizes culture, regeneration, and the healing power of communal efforts.

In previous articles, similar stories of community-oriented individuals showcase the spirit of resilience found in Fijian culture. For instance, Salote Malani, another community leader, advocates for sustainable practices and political engagement to facilitate positive change in Fiji, while Suliana Sandys cherishes her historical roots in Levuka, emphasizing the importance of family and community respect. These narratives echo Lara’s mission, illustrating the collective resolve among Fijians to foster resilience and empowerment within their communities.

As Lara Vokai continues her vital work on Nukubati, there remains a hopeful perspective: the strong commitment to sustainable practices and community heritage can inspire future generations toward a more vibrant and ecologically sound future.
