The government is reaffirming its commitment to supporting rural and maritime communities through a recent initiative that delivered essential farming tools to three agricultural cooperatives in Serua and Namosi. This effort aims to enhance agricultural productivity and bolster food security within these areas.

During a visit to Serua, Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, presented the farming tools as part of the Ministry’s Rural Outer Island Development Programme. This program is designed to boost agricultural activities in remote locations by ensuring farmers have access to the necessary resources.

Minister Ditoka emphasized the significance of improving farming practices, stating that the Ministry of Agriculture is implementing programs focused on increasing yields for farmers. He pointed out that while some cooperatives possess tractors, they often lack the implements required to use them effectively, and the government stepped in to address this shortfall.

Additionally, Minister Ditoka provided an outboard engine to the residents of Nuku in upper Serua, which will enhance transportation for over 70 community members. This outboard motor was funded through the Seafaring Entrepreneurial Assistance (SEA) Programme, which seeks to improve the capabilities of communities reliant on maritime resources.

For those seeking future support, Ditoka encouraged cooperative members to prepare applications for the upcoming financial year starting in August, to fully leverage government assistance.

These initiatives reflect a broader commitment to enhancing food security and improving the livelihoods of rural communities by empowering farmers with crucial tools and resources. The government’s proactive approach could inspire more collaborative ventures among farmers, ultimately contributing to greater agricultural productivity in Fiji.

This situation offers a hopeful perspective for the communities involved, reinforcing that support is forthcoming and highlighting the vital role of collaboration in achieving shared goals.
