A recent three-day workshop conducted at the Labasa Market Resource Centre successfully gathered thirty-nine local market vendors, comprising 32 women and seven men, aimed at enhancing their business skills and market operations. This initiative was organized through the Markets for Change Project in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, and the Labasa Market Vendors Association.

During the workshop, participants were provided with essential knowledge on various topics pertinent to market success, including effective market strategies, accurate record keeping, pricing, budgeting, and grant applications. By the conclusion of the training, the vendors were awarded certificates, representing not just formal recognition but also the newly acquired expertise they can implement to improve their businesses.

This program is part of a larger effort seen across the Pacific region, where communities in Fiji, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, and Samoa continue to benefit from similar initiatives focused on enhancing market competencies and facilitating economic independence. The positive impact of these trainings reflects in the growth potential of local vendors, empowering them to actively contribute to sustainable community development.

Such initiatives echo the sentiments from prior workshops aimed at women vendors and small business owners throughout Fiji, where emphasis on cooperative governance, financial management, and entrepreneurial skills has been pivotal. For instance, previous programs have similarly equipped women-led co-operatives with vital training to promote financial literacy, ensuring their business success and fostering community resilience.

As these vendors acquire the skills necessary to grow their businesses, this marks a hopeful step forward in promoting economic empowerment and independence, ultimately leading to flourishing local economies and a sustainable future for their communities. The dedication of these vendors, coupled with ongoing support from governmental and non-governmental organizations, suggests a positive trajectory towards enhanced opportunities and growth for small enterprises in Fiji.
