Promoting healthy habits in schools is essential for enhancing the overall well-being of students. A comprehensive approach that includes healthy eating, regular physical activity, hygiene practices, and community involvement can significantly aid students’ academic and physical success.

Looking ahead to 2025, Diabetes Fiji is committed to transforming schools into thriving hubs of health and wellness. This will be achieved through targeted initiatives and collaborations designed to empower students to adopt healthier lifestyles. Project manager Marawa Kini highlights the goal of fostering robust and supportive healthy environments in partnership with the Ministry of Education.

“By identifying priority schools, we intend to create an atmosphere where students can excel both academically and physically,” Mr. Kini explained. A particularly ambitious aspect of this initiative is the intention to incorporate diabetes education into the national curriculum, equipping students with essential knowledge for lifelong wellness.

As students prepare for the back-to-school season, Mr. Kini emphasized the need for additional planning for those living with diabetes. He noted that Diabetes Fiji, together with its development partners, is dedicated to establishing a healthier future for all Fijians.

Through initiatives like community peer groups, the Young Diabetes Fiji program, and healthcare capacity building, the organization is empowering individuals and communities to better manage their health. Mr. Kini reiterated the collaborative efforts with the Ministry of Education this year, which will serve as the groundwork for integrating diabetes education into schools.

“Let’s approach this new school year with positivity and a resolve to make each day meaningful,” Mr. Kini stated, inviting students, parents, educators, and the broader community to advocate for health and wellness collectively, emphasizing that progress begins with small steps.

This initiative not only aims to foster healthier lifestyles among students but also reflects a significant understanding of how critical education on health issues like diabetes can shape future generations.
