A large gathering formed in the Vatuwaqa settlement in Suva yesterday, as various government departments, civil society organizations, and partner groups came together to provide essential services to local residents. This event is part of the ongoing three-day Rights, Empowerment, and Cohesion (REACH) program, which aims to improve access to vital resources for underserved communities.
Among the participating organizations, Medical Services Pacific (MSP) set up a booth emphasizing sexual and reproductive health. Ana Fofole, the Outreach Coordinator at MSP, announced that the organization is now offering on-the-spot testing for HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), responding to a concerning rise in infection rates. Fofole remarked, “The services we provide focus on sexual reproductive health, and we’ve incorporated point-of-care tests for HIV and STIs. With the rising rates, it’s crucial for residents to take advantage of immediate assistance, which is often more accessible than the longer wait times at hospitals.”
This initiatiative serves as an expansion of MSP’s previous outreach efforts in various communities, which have consistently aimed to address stigmas surrounding testing and promote early detection for better health outcomes. The successful implementation of the REACH program in Vatuwaqa could lead to its expansion to more settlements across Fiji, reinforcing the government’s commitment to inclusivity and better healthcare access.
With much anticipation, residents expressed gratitude for the opportunity to access vital services in their community without the need to travel into town. Healthcare initiatives like this not only provide essential medical support but also foster a sense of community and empowerment by encouraging individuals to take proactive steps for their health.
As the REACH program concludes tomorrow, its positive impact is expected to resonate throughout the community, highlighting a hopeful direction toward improving overall health awareness and access to care for all Fijians. The initiative represents a promising approach to addressing health disparities and enhances the collective wellbeing of local populations.
