On Christmas Eve, Jese Saukuru, the Minister for Youth and Sports, made a significant impact as the sole Member of Parliament to visit rural communities in Vanua Levu, distributing Income Generating Project (IGP) grants. His visit included an important meeting with the Nailou Youth Club in Nailou Village, where 25 young members received $5,000 worth of equipment for their beekeeping initiative. The group was provided with four double honey boxes populated with bees, as well as essential tools like a smoker, hive tool, and safety gear for honey production.
In addition to the IGP grants, Mr. Saukuru donated various sports equipment, including items for volleyball, netball, rugby, and beach volleyball, aiming to promote both youth development and sports participation within the community. He emphasized the ministry’s dedication to empowering young individuals, stating, “This visit reflects our commitment to uplifting youth even in the most remote areas of Fiji.”
The journey to reach Nailou showcased the ministry’s commitment, as Mr. Saukuru and his team traveled by boat for 30 minutes from the mainland due to the lack of road access.
Mr. Saukuru also made a stop at the Sawani Youth Club in Sawani Village to deliver a solar-powered freezer, furthering their sustainable income generation. He presented sports items here as well to promote physical activity among village youth, reiterating the ministry’s goal of ensuring that rural communities are supported in development.
Further extending his efforts, Mr. Saukuru interacted with Anasa Kaitoa, a young farmer from Naruwai Village, who is set to receive essential farming equipment from the IGP grant. This equipment will enable Mr. Kaitoa to improve his farming operations, which include a variety of crops like vegetables and watermelons that are crucial for both his livelihood and the local community.
Mr. Saukuru’s initiatives highlight a proactive approach in providing the necessary resources for sustainable livelihoods, showcasing a commitment to fostering resilience and self-reliance among young Fijians. By continuing to invest in youth development and agriculture, the ministry is paving a hopeful path for future generations.
This article reflects a commitment to building stronger, more self-reliant communities in Fiji, guiding young individuals toward sustainable futures while highlighting the importance of engaging rural areas in national development efforts.
