A national framework aimed at promoting iTaukei empowerment in Fiji has been initiated following a recent ministerial meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica. The meeting sought to facilitate open and inclusive discussions about the challenges faced by the iTaukei community, which has historically seen limited economic participation, with fewer than five percent of businesses in Fiji owned by indigenous individuals.

Kamikamica pointed out that while various programs have been established for the advancement of iTaukei people, their effectiveness has often been undermined by duplicated efforts and scattered interventions. He highlighted the necessity of a cohesive strategy, which is essential in building public trust and ensuring sustainable outcomes.

One of the key decisions made during the meeting was for all ministries to review existing iTaukei-focused initiatives. The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs will act as the secretariat for this assessment, compiling a comprehensive overview of ongoing projects and programs that target the community. This information will inform the formulation of a long-term national roadmap for iTaukei empowerment.

Financial inclusion was a prominent theme at the meeting. Discussions involved the roles of institutions such as the Fiji Development Bank and Merchant Finance in providing tailored support to indigenous entrepreneurs. Additionally, the iTaukei Land Trust Board announced plans to establish specialized entities to enhance the management of land use, encouraging investment and development within the iTaukei community.

These discussions align with ongoing government efforts reflected in the National Development Plan, which seeks to foster economic resilience and inclusion for iTaukei communities. The plan aims to leverage iTaukei land for investment and recognizes the critical importance of supporting marginalized communities to stimulate communal economic empowerment.

By taking a strategic and collaborative approach, the government aims to not only enhance economic opportunities for the iTaukei community but also foster a sense of unity and belonging. These initiatives are laying the groundwork for a more empowered future, highlighting the potential for a prosperous and inclusive economy within Fiji.
