More than 250 participants are anticipated to gather at the National Gymnasium in Suva for the two-day Fiji Farmers Economic Summit 2025. The event, themed “Empowering Farmers for Sustainable Agriculture,” aims to address vital issues such as boosting farm productivity, alleviating poverty, and enhancing community wellbeing.
Key objectives of the summit also include ensuring food security, promoting sustainable land use, and safeguarding environmental and biodiversity interests. Jiu Daunivalu, CEO of the Fiji Crop and Livestock Council (FCLC), noted that the summit will focus on supporting farmers in growing their agribusinesses and transitioning them from merely producing crops to becoming entrepreneurs within the agribusiness landscape.
“Empowering farmers to take an active role in the agricultural sector is crucial,” Ms. Daunivalu emphasized, highlighting the summit’s potential for farmer organizations to showcase their products and engage with prospective members. Participants will have access to various agricultural tools, machinery, and inputs provided by suppliers and service providers during the event, offering them direct access to valuable resources.
Government agencies will also be present to offer services and support, reinforcing the summit’s commitment to creating an inclusive and interactive platform for all attendees. Ms. Daunivalu expressed optimism about the event, as it promises to be a vibrant gathering of diverse stakeholders contributing to the agricultural supply chain, fostering sustainable success, and promoting growth within Fiji’s agricultural sector.
Building on the successes of previous events, including discussions held at the National Agriculture Show, the current summit represents continuous efforts to empower farmers and build resilience in the agricultural sector against challenges like climate change and market fluctuations. As evidenced by increased exports in recent years, the collaborative nature of these initiatives signals a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s farming community and overall economic stability.
The emphasis on cooperation and innovation illustrates a commitment to improving the livelihoods of farmers, ultimately driving sustainable growth and ensuring long-term resilience in the face of changing global agricultural dynamics.
