The Fijian Minister for Land, Filimoni Vosarogo, has announced a two-day training course scheduled for February aimed at informing landowners about effective land management and utilization. This initiative builds on efforts that began in 2010, led by the Ministry’s Land Use Division, which has been instrumental in educating landowners about their rights and the potential benefits of their land.

Vosarogo stressed the multi-faceted importance of land, noting that it serves not only as a financial resource but also holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for many Fijians. He pointed out the critical need for understanding land issues among indigenous iTaukei landowners, who have historically depended on their land for sustenance, heritage, and community identity. The training sessions are designed to strengthen the bond between communities and their land, ensuring that the values and responsibilities associated with land ownership are transmitted to future generations.

In addition, Vosarogo shared that the program will cover both historical and contemporary land management issues, promoting sustainable agricultural practices and improving organizational structures for land leases. To date, the Land Use Division has safeguarded over 106 lands, encompassing more than 10,000 hectares, highlighting a continued commitment to responsible land stewardship.

This proactive initiative is seen as a means to empower landowners in their economic endeavors while honoring their cultural legacies. With Fiji facing challenges such as climate change and urban development, these educational programs are positioned to support landowners in sustaining their livelihoods and preserving their cultural heritage.

The upcoming training aims to integrate traditional knowledge with modern practices, offering participants a well-rounded understanding of land management that could lead to a more resilient approach overall, benefiting both the environment and the communities that rely on these vital resources. This initiative serves as a beacon of hope for the future, ensuring that landowners can navigate the complexities of land ownership with confidence and responsibility.
