The Fiji National Sports Commission has teamed up with ThinkPacific to introduce a “Train the Trainer” program in Naiwaisomo Village, situated in the Nagonenicolo District of Naitasiri Province. Officially launched yesterday, the initiative aims to enhance coaching, refereeing, and umpiring skills among participants, particularly targeting youth, coaches, administrators, and notably many women and mothers from the village.

This program focuses on two specific sports: Netball and Touch Rugby, serving as a precursor to the forthcoming Naitasiri Youth and Sports Tournament scheduled for August. Naiwaisomo Village, located in a remote area but accessible for shopping trips to Ra, provides a conducive environment for rolling out this developmental initiative.

The significance of such programs is echoed in other recent sports training efforts in Fiji. For instance, the Fiji Sports Council has also been conducting various training camps and workshops aimed at empowering young athletes, including off-season athletics programs designed to provide structured training to students from less prominent schools. These initiatives are part of Fiji’s wider commitment to enhancing talent development across multiple sports, which emphasizes skill-building, community engagement, and inclusivity.

The optimism and enthusiasm surrounding this new program not only reflect a robust effort to nurture sports development but also highlight the importance of grassroots involvement, especially among women. As more individuals are equipped with essential coaching skills, it builds a brighter future for sports across Fiji and opens pathways for the next generation of athletes.

This collaborative effort underlines a commitment to fostering a vibrant sports culture in Fiji, aiming for long-term growth and improved performance in athletics and team sports, ultimately benefiting both individuals and communities. Such initiatives signify hope and anticipation for the future, as they contribute to a stronger sports framework within the nation.
