Over twenty farmers have recently benefited from the New Farmers/Lease Premium Grant Program, receiving crucial financial assistance for land acquisition and lease renewals. This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to ensuring secure land tenure, which is essential for fostering progress and productivity within the agricultural sector, particularly in the sugar industry.
During a ceremony held in Lautoka, Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar Industry, highlighted the importance of these grants. He noted that the program is designed to support both new entrants to the sugar sector and existing farmers who are looking to expand their operations. The government has allocated one million dollars for the 2024–2025 financial year, allowing a total of 64 farmers to benefit thus far.
Singh emphasized that the initiative not only empowers new farmers but also plays a critical role in securing land tenure for established farmers. This support is crucial for the long-term sustainability of Fiji’s sugar industry.
The recent assistance to farmers in Lautoka aligns with the government’s broader strategies that have seen over 223 farmers helped through similar initiatives across the nation. The ongoing focus on improving land access and supporting farmers plays a vital role in enhancing the overall productivity of the sugar sector.
By addressing challenges such as labor shortages and high production costs through measures like farm mechanization—where machinery is provided at subsidized prices—the government is ensuring that farmers have the necessary tools to thrive. This holistic approach reflects a commitment to revitalizing the sugar industry and reinforcing the agricultural framework within Fiji.
The present support measures offer a hopeful outlook for the sugar industry, paving the way for innovation and sustainable agricultural practices while enabling both new and established farmers to flourish.
