Residents of Vatuwaqa, a community in Suva, are set to enjoy enhanced access to vital services following the introduction of the Rights, Empowerment, and Cohesion (REACH) program at the Marist Champagnat Institute on May 7, 2025. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection, aims to serve over 900 households, particularly those residing in informal settlements, by aggregating essential services into one accessible location.

The three-day program brings together representatives from various government agencies, civil society organizations, and partners to provide a comprehensive range of services. These include healthcare, education, legal aid, voter registration, financial literacy, social welfare, and counseling, addressing long-standing barriers that have historically limited access for vulnerable populations.

Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Sakiusa Tubuna, who officiated the launch, highlighted the importance of bridging access gaps in these communities. He stated, “By centralizing these services under one platform, REACH helps overcome barriers such as travel costs and lack of information that often prevent communities from accessing vital support.” This proactive response is designed to tackle broader social issues such as domestic violence, substance abuse, and poverty by connecting individuals with necessary resources and information.

Local residents, including Tomukasa from the Wailea Settlement, expressed their appreciation for the program, emphasizing its significance in helping families navigate the resources available to them without having to journey into town. He remarked, “This saves us from travelling to town and helps us better understand what support is out there. People are more likely to take action when they know what’s available.”

The successful launch of this initiative reflects a commitment to inclusivity and social cohesion in Fiji. Building on the achievements of previous outreach efforts, the REACH program is set to expand its reach into underserved communities across the nation. This initiative not only represents a substantial leap toward improving access to essential services for all but also injects hope for a more connected and empowered society. As the program evolves, it aims to foster a supportive environment where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive and access the resources they need.
