Diabetes Fiji has inaugurated its Northern Division tour in Bua, focusing on enhancing diabetic foot care and rural health services. This initiative commenced with specialized training for primary healthcare providers in Nabouwalu, aiming to alleviate diabetic foot complications which are a significant contributor to amputations in the region.

A service audit was conducted at Nabouwalu Hospital to evaluate existing standards and pinpoint areas needing improvement. Additionally, the team engaged with community diabetes peer support groups in Makolei and Naruwai, where dedicated volunteers have continued their health education efforts, even after formal support ended in 2018. Notably, the intervention in Makolei has resulted in only three registered diabetes cases, with none reporting complications due to the ongoing peer support and monitoring.

Diabetes Fiji emphasizes that grassroots health leadership is essential for combatting non-communicable diseases. The Northern Tour will progress through other subdivisions in the following weeks, further aiming to expand its impact.

This initiative resonates with previous efforts in Fiji to address the diabetes crisis, which has affected approximately 30% of the population. Earlier articles highlighted the importance of community-driven health strategies and the collaboration between organizations, such as Diabetes Fiji’s partnership with Aspen Medical, which focuses on integrating diabetes care within the healthcare system. Such community engagement underscores a hopeful future where collective efforts can significantly improve health outcomes and reduce the burden of diabetes in Fiji.

The embodiment of grassroots leadership in health education is paramount. As more communities rally together to promote awareness and support, the potential for lasting positive change in the management of diabetes becomes increasingly attainable.
