Villagers from various communities in the Tikina of Sawakasa in Tailevu came together at the Nananu Village Hall this week for a hands-on training workshop focused on food preservation and climate-resilient gardening. This initiative, organized by Live and Learn, aims to enhance disaster preparedness and promote environmental sustainability within the region.

The workshop attracted 23 participants from 11 villages, including Nasinu, Delakado, Driti, Burelevu, and Namena, showcasing a concerted effort to tackle the challenges posed by climate change. Participants engaged in learning traditional methods of food preservation while also exploring locally adapted crop options that can contribute to their income amidst changing environmental conditions.

Additionally, the Department of Women Central Division supported the initiative by delivering sessions on home-based food use, financial planning, and sustainable practices, emphasizing the importance of long-term food security. With the effects of climate change already being felt across Fiji, such capacity-building programs are crucial. They promote self-reliance and climate resilience within communities, particularly empowering women with practical skills and knowledge that can make a lasting impact.

This workshop aligns with broader national efforts to build resilience against climate challenges. The workshop serves as a continuation of initiatives mentioned in similar recent events aimed at strengthening local capacity, such as resilience-building workshops driven by collaboration among government entities and NGOs.

The focus on empowering women through sustainable practices and knowledge-sharing initiatives is particularly hopeful, as it not only enhances family livelihoods but contributes to the overall community resilience against future climate challenges. By fostering such skills, these training programs can pave the way for more sustainable and resilient communities, demonstrating a proactive approach in adapting to an uncertain future.
