“Empowering Choices: Fiji’s Youth Tackle Crime and Build a Brighter Future”

Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu recently addressed students during the Prefects Induction and Awards ceremony at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School, urging them to make wise choices that will positively impact their future. The ceremony, held at Kshatriya Hall in Suva, provided a platform for the Commissioner to speak candidly about the concerning rise in youth crime over the past decade, including drug abuse, sexual offenses, and robbery.

In his speech, Tudravu stressed that many young people fall into a cycle of crime due to poor decision-making, declaring, “Choose life in its beautiful form, not one darkened by addiction.” He emphasized that the choices students make now can affect their health and futures significantly, particularly noting the long-term consequences of drug-related offenses that can lead to a police record and hinder personal progress.

Tudravu also reached out to parents and guardians, encouraging them to take more responsibility in their children’s educational journeys. He pointed out that families often blame educators and the system when issues arise, failing to recognize their own role in shaping their children’s decisions. “Humility in accepting responsibility will positively influence your children,” he asserted, spotlighting the importance of open dialogue and support at home.

The event celebrated the achievements of appointed prefects, with Year 13 students Wame Vosayaco and Siya Maharaj taking on leadership roles as Head Boy and Head Girl, respectively. This recognition aimed to inspire student leaders to uphold standards of integrity and responsibility that encourage a positive school environment.

This initiative resonates with ongoing efforts by educational leaders in Fiji, including a push for reforms to better equip students for social challenges. With increased community involvement and parental support, there is hope for fostering a generation of young people who understand the value of good choices and can contribute positively to society. As these conversations continue, they shine a light on a collaborative approach needed to combat the pressing issues facing Fiji’s youth, fostering resilience and a hopeful future.
