Epeli Tukuwasa considers himself fortunate to have benefitted from the Young Adults Development Reform Alliance (YADRA), a transformative initiative that aims to assist disadvantaged youth in Nadi. The YADRA shelter, situated in Mulomulo, is dedicated to providing a safe space for at-risk individuals, helping them transition off the streets and reintegrate into society.
At 25 years old, Tukuwasa has resided at the shelter for two years, and he describes his experience there as a second chance. “We have learned many things at the YADRA shelter, but mainly just loving each other and finding our purpose in life,” he shared. He emphasizes the valuable skills and support he has gained, which he believes will help him in the future when he starts his own family.
Prior to joining YADRA, many of Tukuwasa’s friends remained on the streets, leading him to feel compelled to stay with them. However, through YADRA, he has secured job opportunities, with some individuals now working in restaurants and hotels. The shelter has enabled its participants to develop essential skills for adulthood, and Tukuwasa frequently visits his friends on the streets to offer support.
These insights align with broader trends observed in Fiji, where initiatives like YADRA are working to uplift marginalized youth. The Ministry of Youth and Sports has also been actively involved in providing employment and vocational training programs, similar to those YADRA offers, which have had significant impacts on other young lives. For instance, success stories from previous initiatives showcase individuals overcoming adversity and forging new paths for themselves.
Community support plays a critical role in these efforts, highlighting the shared commitment to nurture and empower vulnerable populations. Through continued collaboration and initiatives, there is growing optimism for the future of Fiji’s youth, as they embark on journeys of transformation and resilience. As many in the community rally behind these young individuals, the potential for a brighter future expands, underlining the importance of second chances and support in shaping lives.
