The Climate Smart Garden Project team recently organized a two-day disability awareness event aimed at empowering individuals with disabilities, particularly young women, girls, and children, through education in climate-smart gardening practices. This initiative engaged local communities and was led by Mr. Epeli Lalagavesi, a seasoned practitioner with experience in supporting disabled students in Fiji and Australia.

Mr. Lalagavesi, who holds a Master’s degree in Disability in Policy and Practice from Flinders University, led informative sessions that explored various conceptual models surrounding disability, including the medical and social perspectives. Participants discussed significant societal challenges that often arise from inaccessible environments rather than just physical impairments.

Special guest Mr. Josaisa from the United Blind Organization provided valuable insights into the daily experiences of blind individuals, enhancing awareness of their accessibility needs. Additionally, a basic sign language session by Perina, a member of the disability staff, equipped attendees with essential communication skills for engaging with the deaf or hard-of-hearing community.

“This training was not solely about awareness; it was about fostering understanding, inclusion, and enabling participants to thrive through community-based solutions like climate-smart gardening,” emphasized Mr. Lalagavesi.

Activities during the event emphasized the importance of a person-centered approach, advocating for the inclusion of people with disabilities in various decision-making processes within the community. “If you want to support someone with a disability, ask them. They are the experts of their own experiences,” he remarked.

This initiative serves as a significant step towards inclusive community development in Fiji, aligning with similar efforts in the area, such as the ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure and educational supports for individuals with disabilities. Notable preceding initiatives point to a broader commitment to accessibility and inclusivity across various sectors in Fiji, highlighting positive trends toward equity in local communities.

These collaborative efforts are paving the way for a more inclusive future, blending important lessons learned with hands-on training, marking a hopeful direction for individuals with disabilities in local communities.

The event reflected a proactive commitment to creating sustainable solutions that empower individuals while fostering an inclusive environment throughout the region. By addressing social barriers and promoting practical skills, programs like these not only enhance individual lives but also contribute to community resilience against climate challenges.
