During a recent session in the High Court in Suva, intense emotions surfaced as Kelevi Vakaruivalu confronted Tevita Qaqa Kapawale, who has been found guilty of murdering five crew members aboard the MV Tiro II in 2021. Vakaruivalu, the brother of victim Qiritavabea Cagilabakomeli, made a powerful statement in court, expressing deep resentment towards Kapawale and stating, “YOU filthy animal, I hope you rot and suffer all your life.”
The victims, all under 45 years old, included Fijians and Indonesians. Justice Dane Tuiqereqere recently concluded that Kapawale was responsible for the heinous acts, which also involved the attempted murder of fellow crew member Kaminieli Tucama and threats against Mitieli Cama. The prosecutor, Triveshni Sharma, highlighted Kapawale’s violent history and the premeditated nature of the crimes, reiterating that Kapawale had attacked the victims with an axe.
During the emotional proceedings, family members shared their sorrow and ongoing struggles since the tragedy. Tarasese Rokoceva, the wife of victim Samuela Sukera, displayed remarkable resilience by expressing her forgiveness and discussing her efforts to support her son and family in the wake of their loss. Survivors of the attack, including Tucama, conveyed the trauma they’ve endured, notably noting how the events have led to high levels of fear and unemployment for them.
As the court prepares for Kapawale’s sentencing on August 12, the case has sparked discussions about enhancing maritime safety regulations to protect individuals at sea. The community remains hopeful that this tragic incident will lead to justice for the victims’ families and catalyze improvements in safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
This case not only underscores the grave implications of violent acts at sea but also has mobilized the community toward seeking justice and safety enhancements, paving the way for a more secure environment for all mariners in the future.
