The Divisional Commissioner of the Western Division, Apolosi Lewaqai, has announced that efforts are underway to distribute food rations to 61 families currently residing in evacuation centers. This initiative is crucial as these families recover from recent adverse weather conditions.

Lewaqai highlighted that teams are actively distributing food supplies in locations including Andrews Primary School, Saioni Church, Korovuto Secondary School, and the Vou Dance Group Office. Following established protocols, food rations are provided to evacuees 48 hours post-evacuation, and preparations are on track to complete the distribution today.

In addition to the food distribution, assessment teams are conducting evaluations of housing and checking residual water levels, underscoring the urgent need for cleanup in the affected areas. While the weather in the Western Division is currently clear, the Fiji Meteorological Service warns of potential rainfall due to an impending weather system, which could complicate recovery efforts.

Lewaqai urged the public to take safety precautions by wearing sturdy footwear and protective gear while cleaning their homes and to seek assistance from the Ministry of Health’s public health staff during this recovery phase. Emergency operations centers will stay active as more rain is predicted over the weekend.

Furthermore, all relevant agencies have been updated on initial damage assessments, with a commitment to focusing on comprehensive evaluations to determine the support needed by the impacted communities.

In summary, while challenges remain due to the weather and clean-up needs, there is a concerted effort by various teams to ensure the welfare of those affected and to facilitate a swift recovery. The presence of emergency operations and ongoing assessments gives hope that the affected communities will receive the assistance they need to rebuild and move forward.
