The Divisional Commissioner for the Western Division, Apolosi Lewaqai, announced that the primary focus is on providing food rations to 61 families currently residing in evacuation centers. Efforts are being concentrated in Nadi, with teams actively distributing food packages at locations such as Andrews Primary School, Saioni Church, Korovuto Secondary School, and the Vou Dance Group Office.
Lewaqai clarified that according to established guidelines, food rations are provided to evacuees 48 hours after their relocation. The teams are working diligently to prepare these food packages and aim to complete the distribution by the end of the day.
In addition to food distribution, Lewaqai mentioned that the teams are conducting assessments to evaluate the situation on the ground, focusing particularly on the condition of homes and the remaining water levels in affected areas. Though sunny weather prevails in the Western Division at present, the Fiji Meteorological Service has issued warnings of possible rain, attributed to a band of clouds expected to linger over the country in the coming days.
The Commissioner urged the public to take precautions during cleanup efforts, advising them to wear protective gear, especially sturdy shoes. He emphasized the importance of seeking guidance from Ministry of Health staff who are available to provide public health support.
Emergency operations centers will remain open as authorities anticipate continued rainfall throughout the weekend. Lewaqai noted that all relevant agencies have been briefed on the initial damage assessment, focusing on comprehensive assessments following the disaster to determine the assistance needs of affected communities.
This collaborative effort showcases the community’s resilience and commitment to disaster response, as various agencies come together to support those in need during challenging times. It is a reminder of the importance of community and cooperation in recovering from natural disasters.
In summary, the Western Division is focusing on distributing food rations to displaced families and conducting damage assessments, all while facing potential further rainfall. The engaging response from the authorities highlights not only the urgency of the situation but also the spirit of togetherness that strengthens communities in times of adversity.
