China’s Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, delivered a compelling address at a recent open day at the Chinese Embassy, encouraging Chinese students to remain in Fiji and contribute to the nation’s development. Highlighting the longstanding presence of Chinese immigrants in Fiji, which dates back to the early 19th century, Zhou emphasized the significant impact they have had over the past 170 years. Currently, there are about 10,000 people of Chinese descent in a population of over 900,000, reflecting their integration into Fiji’s diverse culture.
During his speech, Zhou urged the students to excel academically and utilize their education to help shape a promising future for Fiji. He passionately stated, “In the future, become a talented person. Build Fiji into a beautiful country. Write your own stories. Respect others. The library is always your home.” This sentiment echoes the idea that education is a pivotal avenue for personal and national growth.
Zhou also encouraged the younger generation to honor their heritage and carry forward the legacy of their ancestors, who immigrated with aspirations for a better life. He articulated a vision of unity, perseverance, and hard work that defines the spirit of the Chinese community in Fiji.
Dr. Zen Low, Executive Director of Zens Medical Centers, shared his experiences at the event, illustrating how learning from diverse cultures has contributed to his professional success. He stressed the essential traits of respect and wisdom handed down through generations, which he believes form the foundation for a successful life.
This gathering not only celebrated the contributions of the Chinese community but also marked the approach of notable anniversaries: the 50th year of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji and the 170th anniversary of Chinese settlement in Fiji. Both milestones underscore the vital role the Chinese community plays in the economic and cultural landscape of the nation.
Zhou’s call for students to engage actively in Fiji’s progress presents an optimistic outlook for the future, instilling hope for continued collaboration among various ethnic groups towards national development. The strong ties between China and Fiji, bolstered by mutual respect and understanding, herald a bright potential for the years to come.
