The situation surrounding Barbara Malimali has intensified, as Ana Mataiciwa, the Supervisor of Elections, has filed a police report against the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). This report, filed on November 28, 2024, with Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, outlines allegations of abuse of office, as well as intimidation and harassment of witnesses.

This complaint is related to an ongoing Criminal Investigation Department (CID) inquiry involving Ms. Malimali. The CID is examining claims of wrongdoing during her time as chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), which have sparked scrutiny from a Commission of Inquiry regarding Ms. Malimali’s appointment.

Investigations into the matter are currently in progress, as confirmed by Mr. Chew. Ms. Mataiciwa explained that her decision to file the report was prompted by recent communications from the Secretary to the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) on November 8 and the Chief Registrar’s Office on November 19. These notices included requests for her to respond to allegations Ms. Malimali made against her, which implicated her in facilitating Ms. Malimali’s arrest.

In addition, the Chief Registrar’s Office asked Ms. Mataiciwa and other legal professionals to respond to a complaint about alleged professional misconduct brought forward by Ms. Malimali. Ms. Mataiciwa argues that Ms. Malimali, being a significant witness in an active CID investigation, engaged in actions that constitute intimidation and harassment.

Moreover, former Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC Francis Puleiwai has lodged a separate complaint against Ms. Malimali, alleging she misused her authority as commissioner to enforce a departure ban earlier this year. This case has also been sent to the CID for further investigation.

Despite attempts, no comments were obtained from Ms. Malimali as of the time of publication.

This unfolding affair highlights a significant moment in Fijian politics and governance, emphasizing the critical role that integrity and accountability play within the public sector. As investigations progress, there lies the hope that a thorough examination of the allegations will lead to greater transparency and a fostering of trust in the electoral process in Fiji.

In summary, the Malimali saga signifies a notable clash of allegations and official inquiries, aimed at ensuring accountability among public officials while raising broader concerns regarding conduct and integrity within electoral institutions.
