Isimeli Batibalei, a 35-year-old man, faced charges in court yesterday, including theft and resisting arrest, related to an attempted robbery of a 69-year-old man at the Nakasi RUPS Complex on January 31. Batibalei expressed his desire to plead guilty to all charges during his appearance before Magistrate Charles Ratakele.
According to allegations, not only did Batibalei attempt to rob the elderly victim, but he also resisted arrest when police attempted to apprehend him on February 9 at his home in Wainibuku. The prosecution, led by Police Prosecutor Setariki Mocevakaca, argued against granting bail, citing the seriousness of the offenses and the necessity to protect vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly, from such crimes.
Magistrate Ratakele informed Batibalei that his plea would be addressed in a future court session with Magistrate Navilesh Chand, where he will also be required to submit a formal bail application. The court has scheduled a hearing for bail on February 26.
This case highlights the ongoing concern regarding the safety of elderly citizens and the need for the legal system to address crimes that can affect their wellbeing. It serves as a reminder of the community’s responsibility to protect its most vulnerable members, ensuring they feel safe and secure in their environment.
