Niraj Prasad, age 49, has been remanded in custody following allegations of stealing a bank card and pension money from 86-year-old Malakai Kauwale. The Suva Magistrates Court noted Prasad’s prior convictions for two theft-related offenses, as well as a history of failing to appear for bail.

Charged with one count of theft, Prasad has been informed of his right to legal representation but has chosen to represent himself in this case. He has been granted until Monday, January 12th, to file a formal bail application while remaining in custody. The court has adjourned the matter to that date for further proceedings.

This case brings attention to issues concerning the elderly and financial security, highlighting the importance of safeguarding vulnerable populations against theft and fraud. The upcoming hearings may serve as an important reminder of the justice process in addressing such offenses.
