Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) has announced the appointment of Fatiaki Gibson as its new Chief Executive Officer to lead the company in its ambitious multi-billion dollar green energy transition. Mr. Gibson steps into this role with a wealth of experience in the energy sector, having previously served as General Manager for Major Projects at EFL and having been instrumental in projects like the Nadarivatu hydroelectric scheme.

Gibson will lead EFL’s substantial investment plan of $2 billion aimed at developing 165 megawatts of solar energy in Fiji over the next four years. EFL Chairman Rokoseru Nabalarua expressed confidence in Gibson’s abilities, noting his previous involvement in significant projects and readiness to tackle the challenges associated with the aggressive renewable energy strategy. Nabalarua highlighted the importance of ensuring a continuous power supply while transitioning towards more sustainable energy sources.

In addition to the solar developments, EFL will invest in an interim 50 megawatts of fossil fuel energy to bridge the gap while renewable energy sources are brought online. With energy demand in Fiji rising quickly, the organization’s strategic focus underscores its commitment to reliable energy delivery.

Gibson, who has spent over 34 years in the energy field, expressed his enthusiasm for leading EFL during this transformative period. He articulated the critical importance of energy development for Fiji’s economic growth and affirmed his commitment to enhancing the country’s energy infrastructure through hydro and geothermal projects and parallel works on solar energy sources.

His appointment represents a key moment for EFL as it aims for a transition to 90% renewable energy by 2035, aligning with wider sustainability goals in the Pacific region. Gibson’s extensive track record and insights into energy systems and infrastructure position him as a strong leader capable of guiding EFL towards a greener and more sustainable future.

The outlook appears optimistic with Gibson’s leadership expected to foster innovation and advancements in renewable energy practices, benefitting both EFL and the broader Fiji community.
